  1. Welcome to SoftQuad HoTMetaL, a freely distributed professional SGML editor
  2. especially for HTML files.

  4. This distribution is for Microsoft Windows 3.1; it will not run without
  5. Microsoft Windows.  You will need about 5 Megabytes of free disk space on
  6. your hard drive.
  7.  
  8. SoftQuad HoTMetaL has been made available by SoftQuad Inc., and is not
  9. a product of NCSA.  This is an unsupported product of SoftQuad Inc. -- please
  10. see the copyright file (copyright.txt) for more information.

  31. [2] The Difficult Decision
  32.  
  33. You will need to choose somewhere to install SoftQuad HoTMetaL.
  34. A directory called "hotmetal" will be created, but you can put that
  35. directory anywhere you like.

  37. You will need approximately 5 Megabytes of disk space.
  38. We'll assume that you chose C:\HOTMETAL, but you can put it anywhere.

  41. [3] Unpacking the distribution (if you haven't already done so)
  42.  
  43. Change directory to the place you chose in step [2], for example, in
  44. an MS/DOS window (or in MS/DOS), and unpack the archive:
  45. >>    C:> cd \
  46. >>    C:> L:\hotmetal.exe -d
  47.  
  48. This example creates a HOTMETAL directory inside C:\, so you end up with
  49. C:\HOTMETAL; the hotmetal.exe self-extracting distribution was on a
  50. networked L: drive, but you could have put it anywhere you had space.

  53. [4] Set up a Program Item
  54.  
  55. In Windows, create a new Program Item, with
  56.        Name: SoftQuad HoTMetaL
  57.     Command: C:\HOTMETAL\BIN\SQHM.EXE -sqdir C:\hotmetal
  58.       Directory: C:\HOTMETAL
  59.  
  60. [5] Print The Manual (optional)
  61.  
  62. If you want to print out the manual, it's in hotmetal/doc/hotmetal.ps, and
  63. you can send it to any PostScript printer (it uses LaserWriter Plus fonts,
  64. such as Palatino, however).
  65. The manual will use about 60 pages.

  69. You can do this later if you're impatient.

  72. [7] Create an Association in File Manager (optional)
  73.  
  74. In File Manager, choose the "Associate..." menu item from the "File" menu.
  75. Associate files having the extension HTM with C:\HOTMETAL\SQHM.EXE."
  76.  
  77. This will let you launch HoTMetaL by double-clicking on an HTML file.
  78. Of course, you may prefer to have a browser such as NCSA Mosaic launched
  79. instead in this case.
